Aruna Sundararajan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology today appointed as Secretary, Department of Telecommunications

Aruna Sundararajan, lAS (KL 82), Secretary, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology was today appointed as Secretary, Department of Telecommunications in the existing vacancy.

She was already holding additional charge of the Department, which was without a full time Secretary since previous Secretary JS Deepak moved to the WTO as Indian Representative. The appointment was crucial looking at the critical financial condition of the Telecom sector with a debt of about 7.29 lakh crore.

She has also served as Director of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd from July 29, 2015 to October 21, 2015 and Additional Secretary, Telecom & Administrator Universal Service Obligation Fund, Government of India & CMD BBNL (Bharat Broadband Network Ltd) the SPV (Special Purpose Vehicle) established for overseeing India's rural high-speed broadband project to provide access to 60 crore citizens under the "Digital India" Programme.

Sundararajan was honoured as one of the top professional women achievers by India Today in 2009 and by Forbes Business Magazine in Aug 2012.

Aruna Sundararajan earlier served as Managing Director of Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation Ltd and also as a Non-Executive Independent Director of Geojit BNP Paribas Financial Services Limited from January 14, 2014 to December 12, 2014.

Sundararajan played a key role in establishing the IT department as founding IT Secretary in her stare Kerala in 1998.

She was known for her pioneering work in mass e-literacy in Kerala through Akshaya programme, first started in the rural district of Malappuram in Kerala and subsequently extended to the entire state. Akshaya was largest e-literacy project of its kind with over 10 lakh people being trained in basic digital skills on a campaign mode. It also catalysed one of the largest known Internet Protocol (IP) based rural wireless networks globally.

She was also instrumental in establishing the IITMK, and InfoPark, Kochi, which changed the IT landscape of the state and in initiating the SMART City project, Kochi. She had held many important positions including the Country Head of the Global E schools Initiative of the UN and CEO of the prestigious Common Service Centre Project under the National E-Governance Project.
She is a Post Graduate in Philosophy.
