Coal Ministry's CSR Initiatives Transform Healthcare, Empower Communities

Under the leadership of Union Minister of Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, the Ministry of Coal, through its CPSEs, has integrated social responsibility as a key aspect of its operations, driving socio-economic development and reinforcing its role as a responsible corporate entity. Coal India Limited (CIL), its subsidiaries, and NLCIL are committed to enhancing community well-being, with an annual CSR budget of around ₹800 crores. This investment focuses on health, education, skill development, environmental sustainability, women’s empowerment, and community development.

Health Sector Achievements:

  1. Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana (TBSY) by CIL: CIL's flagship initiative, TBSY, has successfully completed 500 Bone Marrow Transplants (BMTs), offering financial assistance of up to ₹10 lakh per patient for treating Thalassemia Major and Aplastic Anaemia. Launched in 2017, the program has benefited 356 underprivileged children and has been recognised with ‘The Green Environment Award’. With an investment of ₹70 crore, it continues to provide vital support for medical treatments.

  2. Dialysis Centre in Cuddalore by NLCIL: NLCIL has improved healthcare access by establishing a Dialysis Centre in Cuddalore Government Hospital, enabling 13,000 dialysis cycles annually and enhancing medical care in the region.

  3. Medical Oxygen Plants: In response to the pandemic, NLCIL and its joint ventures set up 28 Medical Oxygen Plants with a capacity of 2,500 beds across Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, significantly boosting healthcare infrastructure.

  4. Project Nanha Sa Dil: Addressing Congenital Heart Disease (CHD), CIL’s Project Nanha Sa Dil aims to screen 18,000 children in Jharkhand and provide interventions for 500 children, along with training 50 young professionals in pediatric cardiac care. Funded at ₹9.37 crore, the project is initially focused on four districts, with plans for expansion.

Other Notable Health-Related CSR Efforts:

  • Construction of Premashralay: A home for outpatients undergoing cancer treatment in Kolkata.
  • Mobile Healthcare Services: Healthcare provision via mobile units to underserved populations.
  • COVID-19 Support: Infrastructure development and medical equipment procurement for COVID-19 care centres.
  • Cancer Care Support: Enhanced support at Ranchi Cancer Hospital, including collaboration with Tata Cancer Care.

These initiatives highlight the Coal CPSEs’ dedication to improving healthcare and quality of life across India.
