List of cyclones - A glance:

2009: Four cyclones formed. Two made landfall over India.

• Cyclone Bijli skirted the coast of Odisha and West Bengal in the month of April which later became the ninth wettest tropical cyclone in India.

• Super cyclone Aila formed on May 23 and made landfall in the state of West Bengal on May 25.  It was the worst cyclone after Cyclone Sidr. It caused 149 fatalities and more than 100,000 people left homeless and the damage cost was US$1 billion.

• Cyclone Phyan formed on November 4 and made landfall in Pune in Maharashtra. It became the fifth wettest tropical cyclone in India. 

2010: Five cyclones formed with two Indian landfalls. The above-average activity was influenced by the La Nina.

 

• Cyclone Laila caused $117 million in damage and 65 people were killed. It was the first cyclone to hit South India during the pre-monsoon season in 20 years.

 

• Cyclone Jal hit Tamil Nadu and made a direct hit over Chennai and brought considerable damage. 

2011:- Two cyclones. One made landfall over India.

• CycloneThane made landfall over Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu on December 30. It made catastrophic damage over, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu.

2012:- This season had the latest start in the North Indian Ocean basin on record by the first system forming on October 12.

• Cyclone Nilam and made landfall in India that year, attacked Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu in October, and brought damage to that state and the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh. 

2013: Five cyclones forming and four made landfall over India.

Cyclone Viyaru worsened the heatwave conditions over South India as it moved away from India and hit Bangladesh.

 

• Cyclone Phailin was a category 5 hurricane and made landfall over Gopalpur in Odisha. The most intense storm since 1999 was Odisha Cyclone. More than a million people have been evacuated in preparedness for this cyclone.

 

• Cyclone Helen and very severe cyclonic storm Lehar made back-to-back landfall over Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh in the month of November. Cyclone Helen killed 12 people in Andhra Pradesh.

 

• Cyclone Madi tracked a rare path in the Bay of Bengal by moving northeast initially and making sharp turns towards the southwest in the month of December. 

2014: Three cyclones forming with only one making landfall over India.

• Storm Nanauk formed over the Arabian Sea but delayed the onset of the Southwest Monsoon over Kerala.


• Cyclone Storm Hudhud made a catastrophic landfall in its peak intensity of category 4 hurricane over Visakhapatnam on October 14 and made worse damage.  

2015: Four cyclones formed, but the season did not feature even a single Indian landfall. 

• Cyclone Komen after attacking Bangladesh entered India and brought the worst floods in East India killing 285 people. It's the deadliest cyclone worldwide in the year 2015.

2016: Four cyclones formed with three affecting India. 

 •Cyclone Roanu tracked a rare path in the month of May by skirting the whole East Coast of India and brought beneficial rains for Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha.

 • Cyclone Vardah attacked Tamilnadu and made a direct hit over Chennai killing 12 people and damages of $4.3 billion.

 2017: Three cyclones forming with one affecting India.

 • Cyclone Mora after attacking Bangladesh in the month of May brought deadly landslides over Northeast India which killed 20 people.

 2018: Seven cyclones formed with four attacking India which is the highest amount since 1992.

Cyclone Daye impacted south Odisha early on September 21, near Gopalpur

Severe Cyclone Titli made landfall near Palasa, Andhra Pradesh, at a peak intensity of 150 km/h. It killed over 77 people in Odisha and left many missing. It caused major destruction to East Coast railway.

 

Severe Cyclone Gaja made landfall in southern India, on November 16. 

 

Severe cyclone Phethai developed in the southern Bay of Bengal on December 13. It steadily strengthened and on December 16, and made landfall at Katrenikona on December 17.

• Severe cyclone Fani made landfall at Puri on May 3 as a Category 5 equivalent tropical cyclone which became the strongest tropical cyclone to make landfall in Odisha after 1999 Odisha Cyclone and Phailin. 

• The remnants of severe cyclonic storm Vayu impacted Gujarat causing some damage. Initially, the storm skirted the Saurashtra coast of Gujarat as a minimal category 3 major hurricane.

• Super cyclone Kyarr had struck the Maharashtra coast and caused heavy rainfall across some parts of Western India. It also caused an increase in vector-borne diseases in some areas.

• Super cyclone Maha caused minor damage in western and southern India. It made landfall near Gujarat as depression and weakened.

•  Super cyclone Bulbul formed on November 6 from the remnants of severe tropical storm Matmo which traversed into the Bay of Bengal. Bulbul made landfall at West Bengal. It produced heavy rain over many parts of West Bengal. 

2020: The season was the second in a row to have a Super Cyclonic Storm and the first to record in the Bay of Bengal since 1999.

• Super Cyclone Amphan intensified from a Category 1-equivalent cyclone to a Category 4-equivalent cyclone in just six hours into category 5-equivalent cyclone and super cyclonic storm. It made landfall on May 20 near Bakkhali, West Bengal after weakening subsequently. It left behind a trail of catastrophic damage and was later confirmed to be the costliest storm ever recorded in the basin. 128 deaths were recorded.

 

• Cyclonic Storm Nisarga made landfall near the coastal town of Alibag in Maharashtra. It was the first cyclone to make landfall in Maharashtra since cyclone Phyan in the year 2009

 

• Super cyclone Nivar made landfall between Karaikal and Mamallapuram around Puducherry on November 25. 14 deaths and $600 million damages were reported. It brought considerable damage to Andhra Pradesh too.


• Cyclone Burevi caused heavy rainfall across south India. It brought heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu and those places which were already affected by cyclone Nivar. The storm killed 9 people.

2021: 

• Super cyclone Tauktae caused heavy rainfall across South India, Gujarat, Goa, and Maharashtra. It made landfall on the southern coast of the Saurashtra peninsula in Gujarat and caused moderate to heavy damage in the southern peninsular coastal areas of Gujarat. It was the worst storm to hit Gujarat in 20 years since the 1998 Gujarat cyclone.

• Super cyclone Yaas made landfall over Odisha and became the second cyclone to hit the nation within a span of 10 days. The most affected states are West Bengal and Odisha. At least 10 million people were affected and 300,000 houses were damaged. The cyclone also affected Nepal and Bangladesh.

• Cyclone Gulab had hit Andhra Pradesh close to Kalingapatnam on September 26. Over 20 people were killed across Central India. It largely affected Maharashtra and Gujarat. Later it become cyclone Shaheen after reaching the Arabian Sea on September 30. 

  • Cyclone Jawad is expected to make landfall in Puri, Odisha will have its impact over Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Gangetic West Bengal. The cyclone will also affect Mizoram, Manipur, Assam, Tripura, and Meghalaya in the northeast.
