DU reaches first position in QS World University Rankings (Sustainability): Vice Chancellor


DU is continuously improving in rankings

Unlike small premier institutions, DU is a big institution which is providing education to the masses: Prof. Yogesh Singh

University of Delhi is continuously improving its rankings. DU has reached the first position in India in the QS World University Rankings (Sustainability), whereas last year it was at fourth rank. This information was given by Prof. Yogesh Singh, Vice Chancellor, University of Delhi, during a press meet at DU. On this occasion, in response to a question, he said that University of Delhi is a multi-faculty big institution which is providing education to the masses. This difference should be understood before comparing it with smaller sized premier institutions in terms of ranking. The Vice Chancellor said that University of Delhi will soon come in the top 10 in NIRF ranking also. On this occasion, Dean Ranking, Mukesh Mahlawat shared detailed information through PPT on DU's achievements in rankings.

On this occasion, while giving information regarding admissions, the Vice Chancellor said that registration for Post Graduate (PG) admission in University of Delhi will start from April 25. He informed that the portal will open for registration in postgraduate courses from April 25. Students will be able to register for admission till May 25. After this the second phase of admission will start. The Vice Chancellor said that after the completion of CUET (UG) process, UG admissions will be declared by the middle of May. Dean Admissions, Prof. Haneet Gandhi, giving detailed information on admissions for 2024-25, said that this year admissions will be done on a total of 13500 seats for postgraduate (including NCWEB), 120 seats each for three B.Tech and 60 seats each for BA LLB and BBA LLB courses. He said that this time MA Hindu Studies, MA Public Health, MA Chinese Studies, MA Korean Studies and Master in Fine Arts have also been included in PG admissions.

Dean Ranking Mukesh Mahlawat, while giving detailed information on DU's QS ranking, said that in the QS World University Rankings (Sustainability), DU's position at the international level was 381-400 in 2023, whereas in 2024 it has become 220. In this ranking, DU is now ranked first in India, whereas last year it was at fourth position. In the QS World University Rankings 2023, DU's global rank was 521-530, which has increased to 407 in 2024. DU ranks first in the Central University category in India. In subject-wise ranking: According to broad subject ranking, DU's ranking is 210 in Arts and Humanities, 401-450 in Engineering and Technology, 379 in Life Sciences and Medicine, 345 in Natural Sciences and 178 in Social Sciences and Management. Individual Subject wise, DU's Development Studies is ranked 43rd, Anthropology 51-100, English 101-150, Languages 101-150 and Sociology 101-150. He said that in 9 subjects, DU has secured a higher rank as compared to last year, in 11 subjects the rank has remained the same as last year, while in 4 subjects DU has got the rank for the first time. This time, the University of Delhi has achieved much better scores in Development Studies, Anthropology, History, Business and Management Studies, Biological Science, Computer Science and Information Systems, Linguistics, Chemistry and Environmental Science as compared to last year. University of Delhi has improved in NIRF ranking as well. Overall, DU was ranked 23rd in 2022 whereas in 2023 it has come at 22nd position. In the same university category, it was ranked 13th in 2022 whereas it has come at 11th position in 2023. The Vice Chancellor said that soon we will be in the top 10 in NIRF.

University of Delhi has focused on several aspects to improve its ranking in the last two years. The University has provided financial assistance and has sanctioned approximately Rs 70 crore to the University Science Instrumentation Center (USIC) at North Campus and the Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF) at South Campus for the purchase of various high-end research equipment. The university has strengthened and upgraded the university Science Departments at the North and South campuses and at USIC and CIF to facilitate the operation and repair of existing high-value, sophisticated equipment. For this the university has provided financial assistance of about Rs 8 crore. Faculty Research Program was launched to strengthen and promote the research work of faculty members in various Departments/Centres. Rs 7.5 crore has been sanctioned for 174 research projects during 2022-2023 and Rs 8.5 crore has been sanctioned for 190 research projects during 2023-2024.

The University offers Research Publication Awards to encourage the publication of quality research in top-rated, high-impact journals. The focus is on publications in the top 7.5% of journals in various subject categories. Research grants ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 5,00,000 are awarded based on the Cite Score of the journal (as per Scopus). To date, 22 research papers have been selected for Research Publication Awards, and Rs 27.5 lakh has been sanctioned.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh also expressed happiness on the achievements of former students of DU in the latest declared results of UPSC and said that this time two candidates in the top 5 are from DU. Interestingly, there are a total of two female candidates in the top 5 and both of them have been students of DU, from Miranda House and St. Stephen's College. The Vice Chancellor said that the sixth position was also occupied by a student from the DU only. He told that a total of 5 girl students from Miranda House have passed UPSC and 4 out of the top 50 candidates are from this college. Apart from these, 5 students of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College have also qualified UPSC, out of which one student is at 9th rank. A student of Rajdhani College has secured 136th rank. The Vice Chancellor congratulated them, their families and everyone associated with DU on their achievements. On this occasion Dean of Colleges Prof. Balaram Pani, Director of South Campus, Prof. Sri Prakash Singh, Registrar Dr. Vikas Gupta and PRO Anoop Lather were also present.
