The Defence Ministry of India marked a series of significant events and milestones, reflecting its commitment to excellence, innovation, and humanitarian efforts. From celebrating the 83rd Armed Forces Headquarters (AFHQ) Civilian Services Day to recognising the historic appointment of Lt Gen Sadhna Saxena Nair as the first woman Director General Medical Services (Army), the Ministry continues to set new standards. Additionally, the Indian Air Force (IAF) showcased its vital role in disaster relief operations in Wayanad, Kerala, following a devastating landslide.
83rd AFHQ Civilian Services Day Celebrations
Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh, addressing the 83rd AFHQ Civilian Services Day in New Delhi on 1st August 2024, praised the dedication and hard work of the AFHQ personnel. He emphasised the importance of continually enhancing skills for efficient policy-making and the implementation of reforms within the Ministry of Defence (MoD). Singh highlighted the critical role of the AFHQ cadre in bridging the gap between the Armed Forces and the civilian government, ensuring effective communication and decision-making.
He urged the Department of Defence to explore better career progression opportunities for AFHQ Civilian Services personnel, which would enhance their ability to support the Armed Forces and attract top talent. The celebration underscored the integral role of these personnel in both peacetime and wartime, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and dedication within the Ministry.
Historic Appointment of Lt Gen Sadhna Saxena Nair
In a groundbreaking development, Lt Gen Sadhna Saxena Nair assumed the position of Director General Medical Services (Army), becoming the first woman to hold this prestigious post. With a distinguished career in the Army Medical Corps, Lt Gen Nair has made significant contributions to military medicine, including her involvement in drafting the medical education component of the National Education Policy. Her appointment marks a significant milestone in the history of the Indian Armed Forces, highlighting the increasing role of women in leadership positions within the military.
IAF's Heroic Landslide Relief Efforts in Wayanad
In response to the catastrophic landslide in Wayanad, Kerala, the Indian Air Force (IAF) swiftly launched rescue and relief operations. Beginning on 30th July 2024, the IAF, in coordination with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and state authorities, deployed transport aircraft and helicopters to aid in the relief efforts. The IAF's aircraft, including the C-17, An-32, and C-130, transported critical supplies such as a Bailey bridge, medical aid, and rescue personnel. Helicopters like the Mi-17 and Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) played a crucial role in evacuating stranded individuals and delivering essential supplies.
Despite challenging weather conditions, the IAF's continued commitment ensured the safe transportation of over 200 people and the delivery of vital resources. The IAF's efforts demonstrated their readiness and dedication to providing humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, reinforcing their role as a key pillar in India's defence and emergency response framework.
