Dr Jitendra Singh Receives Lifetime Achievement Award at International Medical Meet
Ceremony held at Chennai to mark the International Meet of leading medical celebrities, professionals and Medicos from all over the country and abroad
Union Minister Jitendra Singh was awarded the prestigious “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the International Meet of leading medical professionals from around the world. This recognition celebrates his exemplary dedication to the advancement of diabetology, diabetes care, and diabetes research, earning him national and international acclaim.
The citation, read by Dr. V. Mohan, Chairman of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Speciality Centre and Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, Chennai, described Jitendra Singh as a renowned teacher, professor, researcher, and practitioner of Diabetology who rose from grassroots to gain prominence both in India and abroad. It compared him to the legendary Dr. B C Roy, highlighting his rare achievement of being a nationally known medical professional who also succeeded in public life, being elected to the Lok Sabha for three consecutive terms and serving in the Union Council of Ministers.
The citation also acknowledged Jitendra Singh's clean image, impeccable integrity, and the respect he has garnered from three generations of colleagues. It noted his unique distinction as the Lifetime Patron of RSSDI (Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India), the largest academic association of Diabetologists.
Jitendra Singh's versatility was highlighted, noting his roles as an academician, researcher, medical teacher, author, and orator. Among his numerous accolades are the "Gold Medal for Oration" from Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) and the “Jamna Devi Gian Devi Award" for journalism. He has authored eight books and three monographs on various aspects of diabetes and contributed chapters to leading textbooks of medicine. His book "Diabetes Made Easy" was featured in the Best-seller section of the World Book Fair at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
His pioneering work on “Stress Diabetes in Kashmiri Migrants” was hailed by the World Health Organization (WHO). He was a member of the DIPSY Group that finalized the “Guidelines for Management of Diabetes in Pregnancy,” later approved for referral by WHO. As a teacher of medicine and diabetes, Jitendra Singh has guided nearly two dozen scholars.
The citation also commended his contributions as a Parliamentarian and Minister, noting his impressive interventions in Parliament and effective handling of various departments and ministries. His hard work, focused approach, and down-to-earth attitude have endeared him to all sections of society.
During the ceremony, when the Gold Medal for the “Lifetime Achievement Award” was placed around Jitendra Singh's neck, the audience gave a standing ovation, clapping endlessly for several minutes. The audience cheered and applauded when it was announced that Jitendra Singh is an alumnus of the prestigious Stanley Medical College in Chennai.
In his acceptance speech, Jitendra Singh expressed his humility and gratitude, saying the award was too big for him and that he could accept it only with utmost modesty. Reflecting on his nearly four-decade-long journey, he acknowledged the divine blessing of growing under the guidance of some of the country's tallest medical professionals and rubbing shoulders with illustrious seniors and colleagues. He vowed to continue his endeavors to live up to the high expectations of his colleagues and prove worthy of the honor conferred on him.
