FSSAI Spearheads Food Safety Campaign in Delhi s Bustling Markets

FSSAI launches awareness campaign on food safety aspects at prominent markets of Delhi

Food Business Operators sensitized about importance of organic farming, raw material testing, ill effects of pesticide residues, artificial ripening and wax coating using unapproved chemicals

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), in a collaborative effort with the Food Safety Department, Delhi, has initiated a comprehensive awareness and sensitisation drive aimed at the bustling markets of the national capital. Commencing on 8th April 2024, the campaign embarked from the renowned Khan Market and INA Market, focusing on enlightening market associations, traders, and food business operators on critical food safety aspects.

Central to the campaign is the emphasis on the detection and control of pesticide residues and contaminants in food, particularly fruits and vegetables. Traders were introduced to FSSAI's innovative "Food Safety on Wheel" mobile lab, which boasts the capability to test for around 50 pesticide residues in fruits, vegetables, milk, and cereals, delivering results promptly.

The initiative also highlighted the paramount importance of adhering to food safety standards, including the necessity for FSSAI licenses or registrations and sourcing raw materials from certified suppliers to ensure traceability and safety. Special attention was given to educating participants about the ill effects of pesticide residues, artificial ripening, wax coating with unapproved chemicals, and the significance of organic farming practices.

The drive underscored the role of rapid testing facilities available in Delhi and neighbouring regions and reinforced the shared responsibility of all stakeholders in the food supply chain towards ensuring food safety under the banner, "Food Safety is Everyone's Responsibility". FSSAI remains steadfast in its commitment to public health, continuously striving to enforce stringent food safety measures across the country.
