Important Notification Regarding Third Phase of Mandatory Hallmarking

Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts (Third Amendment) Order of 2023 establishes the third phase of required hallmarking, which takes effect on September 8, 2023.

The third phase of the mandatory hallmarking will add 55 new districts to the system, bringing the total number of districts covered by the requirement to 343 after the establishment of a hallmarking centre following the implementation of the mandatory hallmarking order's second phase. On the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) website, www.bis.gov.in, under the hallmarking section, you can find a state-by-state list of the newly added 55 districts subject to the requirement for hallmarking.

The decision was announced by the Indian government on September 8, 2023.

More than 4 lakh gold items are being hallmarked with HUID every day as a result of BIS's successful implementation of Mandatory Hallmarking in 256 districts across the nation starting on June 23, 2021, in the first phase, and in 32 additional districts starting on April 4, 2022, in the second phase.

Since the requirement for required hallmarking, there are now 1 81 590 registered jewellers, up from 34 647 before, and there are now 1471 Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs). So far, more than 26 crore pieces of gold jewellery have been HUID-hallmarked.

Customers are urged to use the "verify HUID" feature of the BIS Care app, which can be downloaded from the play store, to confirm the authenticity and purity of the hallmarked gold jewellery products they have purchased.

BIS Care App downloads have climbed from 2.3 lakhs in 2021–22 to 12.4 lakhs in the current fiscal year. Additionally, in the past two years, the BIS Care App's "verify HUID" function has received more than one billion hits.
