Indian Women Lead Global Discussion on Sustainable Development Goals at United Nations
Elected Women Representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions to Participate in CPD57 Side Event “Localizing the SDGs: Women in Local Governance in India Lead the Way” on 3rd May 2024 at United Nations Headquarters in New York
On May 3, 2024, the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, in collaboration with the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), will host a side event titled "Localizing the SDGs: Women in Local Governance in India Lead the Way" during the 57th Session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD57) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
This significant event will feature three distinguished Elected Women Representatives (EWRs) from rural local self-government in India, who will discuss their contributions to sustainable development at the grassroots level. The delegation is led by Vivek Bharadwaj, Secretary of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Government of India.
Highlighting Grassroots Leadership:
Supriya Das Datta, Sabhadhipati, Sepahijala Zilla Parishad, Tripura:
Supriya Das Datta has fostered an inclusive decision-making environment that actively involves women. By establishing discussion platforms, she ensures women's voices are integral in village development processes. Her initiatives to improve childcare facilities underscore her commitment to creating supportive work environments for women, aiming to transform societal norms and promote gender equality.
Kunuku Hema Kumari, Sarpanch, Pekeru Gram Panchayat, Andhra Pradesh:
A fervent advocate for effective public service delivery, Hema Kumari has significantly raised awareness about governmental programs. She has facilitated regular medical camps in her village, ensuring that even the most isolated areas receive proper health services. Her technical background and educational initiatives have enhanced community engagement and service delivery.
Neeru Yadav, Sarpanch, Lambi Aheer Gram Panchayat, Rajasthan:
Known as the "Hockey Wali Sarpanch," Neeru Yadav has championed girls' education and sports to combat gender stereotypes. Her innovative environmental campaigns, such as tree distributions during weddings, reflect her holistic approach to community development and sustainability. Yadav's leadership has been pivotal in promoting gender equality and environmental conservation.
The side event will explore how these leaders are pioneering the integration of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into local governance, highlighting their efforts in advancing gender equality, poverty alleviation, and sustainable community development.
Global Platform, Local Impact:
Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, will inaugurate the event. She will underscore the critical role of Panchayati Raj Institutions in advancing gender equality and empowering women at the grassroots level.
The discussion will also feature insights from Pio Smith, UNFPA Asia Pacific Regional Director, and Andrea M. Wojnar, UNFPA India Representative. Their contributions will emphasize the importance of international cooperation in supporting grassroots movements that empower women.
This event is part of India's broader initiative to promote the role of women in governance through the "100 Days, 100 Cities, and 100 Organizations" campaign, leading up to the International Day of Yoga 2024. It will be livestreamed to reach a global audience, showcasing India's commitment to empowering women and localizing the SDGs through innovative governance models.
