The initial phase of the 2024 General Elections witnessed a significant voter turnout across 21 states and union territories, maintaining peace and enthusiastic participation. This phase wrapped up polling for 10 states and union territories including the entirety of the Northeast, marking a robust start to the 18th Lok Sabha elections.
The preliminary figures indicate more than 60% turnout by 7 PM, expected to rise as final counts roll in. The Election Commission, led by the Chief Election Commissioner along with two other commissioners, meticulously monitored the electoral process from their headquarters, ensuring a smooth execution across all polling stations.
Voters from diverse backgrounds, including first-time and historically low-turnout regions, showed high engagement. Notably, 56 villages in Bastar and the Shompen tribe of Great Nicobar participated for the first time, highlighting the inclusive efforts of the election machinery.
Polling was conducted seamlessly, thanks to the extensive preparations and the deployment of modern facilities at each polling station. In Chhattisgarh’s Left Wing Extremist-affected areas, voters chose democracy over violence, a positive reflection of the peaceful electoral atmosphere.
In the tribal regions of Andaman and Nicobar, the Shompen tribe cast their votes for the first time in a General Election, demonstrating the expanded reach of this year's electoral process. In Mizoram, the spirit of democracy was embodied by an elderly couple who insisted on voting together, showcasing their civic responsibility.
The weather posed challenges with heat in many parts of the country, yet the Election Commission's assurance of minimum facilities at polling stations provided necessary relief to voters. The vibrant cultural attire of voters and their ink-stained fingers became symbols of their fulfilled civic duties.
The first phase of the seven-phase General Elections 2024 successfully concluded with 102 parliamentary constituencies across 21 states and union territories completing their polls. The Election Commission is committed to ensuring a transparent, smooth, and inclusive voting process in the upcoming phases.
