66th Flower Show inaugurated by Delhi University Vice Chancellor Prof Yogesh Singh
The 66th flower exhibition was organized at the Gautam
Buddha Centenary Garden of the University of Delhi on Friday, March 1. Inaugurating the exhibition on this occasion, Vice Chancellor
of the University of Delhi, Prof Yogesh Singh said that flowers inspire life,
but if they do not have fragrance then they do not look good. This is how our
life is. There is a fragrance of goodness, belonging and values in our life.
But if there is no sense of belonging and desire to do good for others in a
person's life and there are no values, then that life is meaningless.
Therefore, just as flowers are good with fragrance, life is good with values.
Flowers teach us this lesson in our life. On this occasion, the Vice Chancellor
also expressed happiness over setting up of a stall from the Rashtrapati Bhavan
in this flower show of the University of Delhi.
Regarding the theme of the exhibition “Women and Nature Promotion –
Celebration of Cooperation and Eternal Development”, Vice Chancellor Prof
Yogesh Singh said that this theme is very appropriate for 2024. Recently
the Indian Parliament has passed the Nari Vandan Act regarding reservation for
women in Parliament and Legislative Assemblies. This year Coconut Amma has
received Padma Shri. The government is honouring such persons by giving them
awards, so that people can take inspiration from their lives. Similarly,
Millets' brand ambassador Lahari Bai and Reeva Sood, popularly known as
Dragon Women, had been invited as special guests in this function today. Both
of them are also a source of inspiration for us. The Vice Chancellor said that
we should take inspiration from such people.
The Vice Chancellor said that in the University we have decided that
festivals should be celebrated with live flowers, flowers should not be killed
by plucking them. For this, instead of plucking flowers for stage and other
decorations in functions, priority is being given to decoration through pots.
Along with this, the Vice Chancellor said that instead of cutting the trees
which are coming in the way during the construction work in the University,
work is being done to plant them at other places. He said that trees have to be
removed for construction works and expansion works, hence work should also be
done on identifying suitable places and planting dense forests in the University,
so that greenery remains intact.
Discussing the production of flowers in India, the Vice Chancellor said
that Karnataka is the front runner in flower production in the country while
states like Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal are also doing seminal
work. Flower farming should be promoted more in North India also. This sector
can also contribute appreciably to the GDP. On this occasion, winners of slogan
writing and flower and gardening competitions were also awarded.
Before the Vice Chancellor, Director of Delhi University SOL, Prof Payal
Mago also addressed the gathering. While discussing the contribution of women
in the conservation of nature, she enumerated the names of many such women of
the country who, living in hilly and rural areas, have done commendable work in
the conservation of nature in their respective areas. Before him, the
chairperson of the flower show, Prof Rajni Abbi gave the welcome speech. At the
end of the program, Secretary of DU Garden Committee, Prof Rupam Kapoor
expressed vote of thanks. On this occasion, Director of South Campus, Prof Sri
Prakash Singh and Registrar Dr Vikas Gupta, along with many dignitaries were
present.
