Cyclone Jawad: Low pressure intensifies into depression over Andhra Pradesh, Odisha

Cyclone Jawad would make landfall in Puri district between the evening of December 4 and the morning of December 5. However, the exact location had not been identified. This is the third cyclone after Yaas and Gulab to reach Odisha in 2021.



Cyclone Jawad formed in the Bay of Bengal around noon on Friday and is expected to travel along the Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts on Saturday before having the landfall in Puri district on Sunday morning. India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director-General Mrutanjay Mohapatra informed the maximum speed of wind may range between 90 to 100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph.  

Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Puri, Ganjam, Gajapati, Bhadrak, Balasore and Nayagarh districts are expected to have highest impact. However, Cyclone Jawad will also have its impact across Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura and cause moderate rain during Sunday and Monday. The intensity of rainfall over Andhra Pradesh and Odisha will increase from Friday evening.

Cabinet Secretary to chair a high-level meeting on Cyclone Jawad, IMD, Defence Ministry, Home Ministry to attend this meeting. The NCMC meets to review the preparedness for the cyclone to ensure that the loss of life and damage to property can be minimized as little as possible.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also checked the preparedness to deal with the impact of the cyclone Jawad.

The IMD has also issued an ‘orange’ alert, with the likelihood of very heavy rainfall December 3 and 4 over the Puri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Khurda, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Cuttack, and Nayagarh districts of Odisha.

“Presently, 46 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed across the three states.  All coastal districts have been covered and the teams have been already pre-positioned,” informed Director General, NDRF, Atul Karwal. While 12 teams have been deployed in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha each, there are 18 in West Bengal, besides two teams each in Tamil Nadu and Andaman and the Nicobar Islands.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.
