Deputy Chief Minister inaugurates newly built hostels in Delhi Technological University
The newly built hostels in
Delhi Technological University (DTU) were duly inaugurated by Delhi Deputy
Chief Minister and Education Minister Manish Sisodia on Wednesday. On this
occasion, Prof Yogesh Singh Vice Chancellor of University of Delhi was guest of
honour and the function was presided over by DTU Vice Chancellor Prof Jai
Prakash Saini. On this occasion, Sisodia said that we need to read the history
of the world from the point of view of education, only then will we be able to
do better.
After the inauguration of
the hostels, speaking at the function organized at BR Ambedkar Auditorium of
DTU, Manish Sisodia said that till now the names of 5-6 hostels were very common among the people studying or in DTU or alumni.
Today two names of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Hostel and Veerangana Laxmibai Hostel
have been added to this list. With the inauguration of these hostels, now about
2600 students have been accommodated in DTU, which was
earlier about 1600. He said that it was a matter of great
happiness.
Sisodia said that Delhi
needs more and more students to get admission in professional higher education.
Institutions like DTU have accomplished this. He said that when he became the
Education Minister of Delhi in 2015, about 6000 students were studying in DTU, which has now
increased to 15000. He told that the higher education
capacity of Delhi has improved a lot over the years.
The Education Minister
said that it is often believed that the best way to get a government job is
that you should not be tainted. Some of our vidvanas have found a way that if
you don't do the work then you will not get stains. But we have to say these stains
are good. He said that when we started working with Chief Minister Arvind
Kejriwal after coming in to the government in 2015, we said that do not be afraid of stains.
We will work and when we
leave the seat, we will not at least feel guilty that we have not done
anything. The result of this is that today after 3 years of hard work these hostels have been built and the seats have also
increased. He said that after working as finance minister for 7 years in Delhi, I can say that if your intention
is right in collecting and spending money, then the government is not short of
money. That's why whenever DTU needed money, we always went ahead and fulfilled
it.
He said
that in 2019, when the DTU was running under leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof
Yogesh Singh, we had laid the foundation stone of these buildings. But, due to Covid,
the one year work was completed in 3 years. Speaking on the achievements of
DTU, he said that under the leadership of Prof Yogesh Singh and Prof JP Saini. “DTU
has made a lot of progress. Ranking tells your progress. Today DTU is ranked
8th by INDIA TODAY whereas before 2015 you were out of this ranking.”
Congratulating DTU for coming out of 35th rank in NIRF rankings, he said that I
think DTU should have been ranked 8th or 10th in this ranking if the ranking is
done in a fair manner and survey is done honestly.
He said
that the real ranking is the choice of the students and the employer for DTU.
Appreciating the DTU IIF, the Deputy Chief Minister said that a startup of DTU,
which detects leakages in underground pipelines, is working with the government
to improve the age old drinking water and sewer system of Delhi. The project is
currently in Germany for prototype making. He said that apart from creating
employable talent, DTU is also working in problem solving for Delhi and the
country.
Referring
to the problem of unemployment, Sisodia said that at present there are 12 crore
people in the country who do not have any work and there are 27 crore people
who are earning less than Rs 35-40 per day. He said that today the per capita
income of our country is about one to 1.25 lakh rupees, whereas many countries
of the world have reached the per capita income of 25-30 lakh rupees. We have
to work on a solution to this problem. For this the education system itself
will have to bear the responsibility.
The
countries of the world that have improved their incomes have used their school
and university systems very wisely. Sisodia said that the educational system
gives the basic for thinking. Giving the example of US universities, he said
that they find best talent from the world and enroll in their institutions and
take 3-4 years of hard work to take the best of them to their companies and
government institutions. The Minister said that today the time has come for our
universities to bring talents from the world and prepare them and take them
into Indian companies, only then the country can develop properly. He said that
I am happy that DTU is working well in this direction. At the end of his
address, Manish Sisodia congratulating to the inauguration of the new hostels and
said that this will provide more facilities to the students, which will lead to
the development of the country.
Prof Yogesh Singh, the Vice Chancellor of University
of Delhi and former Vice Chancellor of DTU, who arrived as a special guest on
this occasion, in his address said that there was a lot of problem of hostel in
DTU which has been completed to a great extent after the inauguration of these
new hostels. The rest of the construction work that is going on is expected to
be completed by September.
He said that projects worth about Rs 400
crore were started in DTU, out of which construction works worth about Rs 300 crore
have been completed. He said that it is great to see all this that DTU is
getting ready in a new form. Along with this Prof Yogesh said that according to
him the three basic criteria for a Vice Chancellor should be construction,
recruitment and increase in the number of seats in the institute.
He said that with the help of the Delhi government,
the seats in DTU also increased and the number of students which was 6000 at
the beginning of his tenure increased to 15 thousand. Posts
were also approved for this and funds were also received for building
construction. He said that at DTU, we have also proved that increasing the quantity
does not degrade the quality.
Prof Singh said that now the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav
is going on and during this time the talk goes on that poverty should be
eradicated from the country for the next 25 years. If
poverty is to be removed from the country, then the growth rate should be 10% in
the next 20-25
years. For this, work should also be done in universities on how this 10% growth
rate will come. For this, something new should be done in universities,
entrepreneurship should be focused and multinational companies should be formed
in the country. He said that the government also has a good focus on this and
DTU is also doing well.
In
the beginning of the inauguration function, DTU Vice Chancellor Prof Jai
Prakash Saini welcomed all the guests. He said that it is a matter of pride for
us that Delhi Education Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia
inaugurated two hostels in DTU today. He said that these hostels have been named
after the national heroes to celebrate the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. Girls
Hostel is named Veerangana Laxmibai Hostel and Boys Hostel as Dr APJ Abdul
Kalam Hostel. These names will motivate the students, living in these hostels,
to follow in the footsteps of these great men.
