Ill-fated Guwahati-Bikaner Express derails in Jalpaiguri, rescue operations at war footing

12 bogies of the ill-fated Guwahati-Bikaner Express derails near Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. Over three dead, many critically injured. The accident took place at around 5 PM. 

The death toll may go up. These are initial numbers. NDRF, rescue teams working at war footing. Relief trains sent. Locals around the accident site are also helping in the rescue operations.  

An exgratia payment of around Rs 5 lakhs announced to next of the kin and Rs 1lakh for injured. Gas cutters are being brought to dig those who are stuck inside.

Railways have issued helpline numbers: 03612731623, 0362731622. Railway cites poor weather but visuals show the clear sky. Not the time for all this but Railways will have to give an explanation as an accident like this raises serious questions on the alleged lacuna on the part of Railways that boast of flawless service and prices are increased in every budget over a safety issue.
