In a groundbreaking move to bolster sustainable transportation and reduce dependency on fossil fuels, Hardeep S Puri, Union Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas and Housing and Urban Affairs, unveiled 'ETHANOL 100,' a pioneering automotive fuel. The ceremony, held at the IndianOil Retail Outlet M/s. Irwin Road Service Station, marked the fuel's availability across 183 selected retail outlets in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, New Delhi, and Tamil Nadu.
Pankaj Jain, Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas; Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman, alongside senior officials from the Ministry and IndianOil, were present at the event.
Puri articulated the fuel's launch as a step aligned with the Prime Minister's vision of transforming Annadatas into Urjadatas, signifying a significant shift towards clean energy sources. ETHANOL 100 is posited as a transformative fuel for the transportation sector, promoting a shift away from traditional fossil fuels.
Highlighting the government's strides towards E20 availability and the ambitious target of 20% ethanol blending by 2025-26, Puri outlined the economic and environmental benefits accrued over the past decade through ethanol blending initiatives. This includes bolstering farmer incomes, generating rural employment, mitigating CO2 emissions, and effecting substantial foreign exchange savings.
Emphasizing the collaborative efforts of Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) in achieving the ethanol blending targets, Puri noted the signing of long-term agreements with dedicated ethanol plants aimed at augmenting annual production capacity. Investments in storage capacity and related infrastructure to accommodate higher blending percentages were also highlighted.
Jain lauded the initiative as a significant move towards adopting sustainable technologies and encouraging investment in ethanol-based vehicles. He underscored the government's commitment to decarbonization and praised IndianOil for leading this initiative, marking ethanol and flex fuels as permanent fixtures in India's energy landscape.
