Indian Coast Guard Vessel Samudra Paheredar Strengthens ASEAN Ties with a Port Call in Brunei

The Indian Coast Guard's Pollution Control Vessel Samudra Paheredar docked at Muara, Brunei on 09 April 2024, marking a significant step in its mission across ASEAN countries. This visit, part of the vessel's overseas deployment, underscores India's commitment to the ASEAN Initiative for Marine Pollution announced in Cambodia during the ASEAN Defence Minister Plus Meeting in 2022.

Over a span of three days, the crew will partake in a series of collaborative activities with Brunei Maritime Agencies, focusing on Marine Pollution Response, Maritime Search and Rescue, and Maritime Law Enforcement. These include cross-deck training, expert exchanges, and sporting events, fostering professional ties and showcasing India's advanced shipbuilding prowess. Furthering India's vision of self-reliance, 'Aatamnirbhar Bharat', and promoting the 'Make in India' initiative, the visit also highlights India's dedication to building and nurturing strong international maritime relations.

Adding a social dimension to the visit, 25 National Cadet Corps members aboard will participate in Beach Cleanup activities, aligning with the 'Puneet Sagar Abhiyan'. This effort not only emphasises the vessel's primary mission against marine pollution but also engages the local youth, reinforcing the global importance of environmental stewardship.

Previously, the vessel's journey included stops in Vietnam and the Philippines, exemplifying India's ongoing commitment to maritime diplomacy within the ASEAN region. This deployment resonates with India's SAGAR doctrine - Security and Growth for All in the Region, complementing the Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific Vision by enhancing maritime safety, security, and cooperation.
