Indian Navy's 360 Degree Appraisal Mechanism

The Indian Navy's 'SHIPS FIRST' strategy is vital to the women and men in white, and they will continue to be its most valuable assets for the foreseeable future. The Indian Navy understands the importance of a sophisticated, flexible, and adaptable human resource management system for encouraging employees' professional and personal development. In order to address this, the Indian Navy formalised the '360 Degree Appraisal Mechanism' for a variety of promotion boards.

Because it doesn't account for or quantify a leader's impact on subordinates, the current appraisal process of recurring Confidential Reports by senior officers has an inherent restriction of a "Top-down" approach. The "360 Degree Appraisal Mechanism" of the Indian Navy seeks to fill this gap by incorporating extensive surveys from adequately identified peers and subordinates for each officer up for advancement. The poll includes a variety of questions covering topics including professional expertise, leadership qualities, suitability in times of conflict or emergency, and potential for holding higher posts. A nominated Board of Officers led by a Flag Officer appropriately quantifies the inputs that have been received in preparation for independent evaluations. Additionally, the cops will receive feedback on this in order to adjust and improve their behaviours.

Many national and international learning bodies are using similar appraisal systems. The Indian Navy is proud to adopt these "best practises," and this programme is a continuation of other efforts to maintain a "Combat Ready, Credible, Cohesive and Future Proof Force."
