The meeting of the two statesmen remained witness to many historical moments as Putin's visit to India at this time is looked upon as both significant and crucial in terms of defence basket.

New Delhi and Moscow issued to the world a high-visibility reminder about their “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership”.

Both the countries had their first-ever 2 + 2 Ministerial Dialogue, in which Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh together held strategic discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu.

In his opening remarks, Putin said, "Russia perceive India as a great power, a friendly nation and a time-tested friend. The relations between both the countries are growing and I am looking into the future." He expressed concern over the developments in Afghanistan. "We shall continue to coordinate on major challenges facing the region," added Putin.

Prime Minister welcomed Putin and said, "Your visit to India is a reflection of your commitment to ties with India." Both the statesmen had discussions including India's plans to give $1bn line of credit to businesses to invest in Russia's Far East region will also help boost trade between the countries.

Defence in India is already using Russian weaponry, such as Sukhoi-30MKI fighter aircraft, T-90S tanks and BMP infantry combat vehicles, Talwar-class frigates, and Kilo-class submarines. The two sides have jointly produced the highly regarded BrahMos cruise missile system.
