Nightingale of India Lata Mangeshkar left for her heavenly abode on Sunday morning due to multiple organ failure at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital.  She was 92.

The mortal remains were consigned to flames at the Shivaji Park crematorium in Dadar, Mumbai with full state honour.

The 'mukhagni' ritual was performed by her brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar's son Aditya. The atmosphere was solemn around the Shivaji Park crematorium. People were unable to control their tears.

The funeral was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earlier in the day, PM Modi had shared his feelings over a public broadcast about his long association with the veteran singer.

The legendary singer was taken to the intensive care unit (ICU) on January 8 after testing positive for COVID-19. She underwent treatment for both pneumonia and COVID-19. Subsequently, she recovered. Her condition deteriorated again on Saturday and was put on ventilator support. Death came around 8:15 am on Sunday morning.

Large number of people were seen standing on both sides of the road to bid farewell to the legendary singer. The cremation was attended by eminent personalities from all walks of life.
