Nightingale of Bengal Sandhya Mukherjee no more; she was 90

Nightingale of Bengal, singer Sandhya Mukherjee passes away due to cardiac arrest in Kolkata. She was 90. 


An era has come to an end with her demise as Bengali households consider it's day incomplete without listening to her iconic songs spanning over decades. Be it "o baba bokum bokum paira" or "
to romantic numbers like "ei poth jodi na shesh hoi" (Saptapati 1961) or "tumi je aamaar" (Harano Shur 1957) to name a few. She sang numerous romantic numbers for Suchitra Sen. Not just Bengali, Mukherjee sang many Hindi numbers too. "tose naina laage re saanwariya" (Mamata 1966) remake of Bengali classic 'Uttar Phalguni' (1963) or "aa jaa re balam tujhe meri kasam" (Ek Do Teen 1953) to name a few. She has worked will all noted music directors both in Bengal and Mumbai. 

Sandhya Mukherjee is a name that is attached to nostalgia for Bengalies who have sang, hummed the iconic songs over decades. Her private albums still sell like hot cakes. New generation or GenNext in Bengal still love to bask in the nostalgia. 

Mukherjee was keeping unwell for past few years due to age. She was hospitalised last week. Death came on Tuesday evening at 7:30 pm due to massive heart attack according to hospital officials.
