President Murmu's Historic State Visit to Mauritius Strengthens Bilateral Ties



On March 11, 2024, President Droupadi Murmu embarked on her inaugural State Visit to Mauritius, signifying a momentous step in diplomatic relations. Welcomed with full state honors by Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, his Cabinet, and senior Mauritian officials at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, the visit underscores the profound connection between India and Mauritius.


During her visit, President Murmu held a meeting with President Prithvirajsing Roopun at the State House, Le Reduit, focusing on deepening the multifaceted relationship between the two nations. She also toured the Ayurvedic Garden within the State House grounds, a symbol of the shared cultural heritage.


A wreath-laying ceremony at the Samadhi of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and Sir Anerood Jugnauth in the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, Pamplemousses, was another poignant moment of the visit, honoring Mauritius's revered leaders.


The day concluded with a banquet hosted by Prime Minister Jugnauth, where President Murmu commended Mauritius for its remarkable achievements since independence 56 years ago. She highlighted Mauritius's status as a leading democracy, a testament to pluralism, economic success, and a beacon of peace and safety globally.


Emphasizing the kinship between India and Mauritius, President Murmu celebrated the accelerated growth in bilateral ties, attributed to mutual prioritization and investment in the relationship. She revealed a new provision under which Mauritians of the 7th generation Indian origin would be eligible for Overseas Citizenship of India, bridging connections with ancestral heritage.


President Murmu reaffirmed India's commitment to progressing alongside Mauritius, aspiring for global peace and prosperity, guided by the principles of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (The World is One Family) and “Sarvajana Sukhina Bhavantu” (May All Be Prosperous and Happy).
