Swachh Amrit Mahotsav 2021: Indore retains first position consecutively for the fifth year

The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MOHUA) organised the ‘Swachh Amrit Mahotsav’ event to award the cities that have done commendable work in keeping their cities clean and garbage-free. The Swachh Survekshan Award 2021 was given by President Ram Nath Kovind. 


President Kovind also announced the rankings for clean and garbage-free cities in the report of ‘Swachh Survekshan 2021’. According to the report, there were many changes in the ranking of cities under the Swachh Bharat programme. However, Indore in Madhya Pradesh managed to maintain its first position consecutively for the fifth year in a row.

Indore was followed by Surat and bagged the award for the position for being the second cleanest city in India. Navi Mumbai and Vijayawada bagged the third and fourth positions respectively.

Maharashtra and Chattisgarh received the maximum number of awards in various categories. Chhattisgarh was also ranked as the country's cleanest state.  

Ahmedabad, Gujarat received the Swachh Survekshan Awards for being the country's cleanest cantonment. Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh which is also the Lok Sabha constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi bagged the cleanest 'Ganga town' award. 

Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri complimented Indore on Twitter, “Indore is India’s cleanest city for the 5th year in a row. Heartiest congratulations to the people, political leadership, Municipal Corporation, Swachhagrahis & Safaimitras for their exemplary commitment towards keeping the city on top".
