TRAI Invites Feedback for National Broadcasting Policy 2024 Proposal

TRAI releases Consultation Paper on ‘Inputs for formulation of National Broadcasting Policy-2024’

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released a Consultation Paper on ‘Inputs for formulation of National Broadcasting Policy-2024’ today.

In an effort to craft the National Broadcasting Policy, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has engaged the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for its expertise under the TRAI Act, 1997. Following this directive, TRAI initiated the consultation process with the release of a Pre-Consultation Paper on 21st September 2023, gathering initial inputs on crafting this pivotal policy. After reviewing 28 comprehensive responses and conducting an in-depth analysis that included international benchmarks and current governmental actions, TRAI has now introduced a Consultation Paper titled 'Inputs for Formulation of National Broadcasting Policy-2024'.

This paper, which seeks stakeholder insights by the 30th of April 2024, is now accessible on TRAI's official website. This step marks a significant move towards delineating a clear vision and strategic roadmap for the broadcasting sector's evolution, particularly in the face of advancing technologies.

The Consultation Paper delves into crucial challenges and opportunities within the broadcasting landscape, aiming to position India as a premier 'Global Content Hub'. It solicits views on a myriad of policy and regulatory frameworks, with the goal of bolstering the economy through expanded reach, spurring innovation, and enhancing R&D. The document also explores avenues for job creation, skill enhancement, startup encouragement, reinforcing public broadcasting, addressing piracy, safeguarding content, and establishing a reliable audience measurement system among others.
