Tribes India launches Mahua Nutrabeverage in collaboration with IIT Delhi and National Research Development Corporation

After two years of research collaboration with IIT, Delhi, TRIFED has developed Mahua flower (Madhuca latifolia) based Nutrabeverage in blend with other conventional fruits which has higher nutritional value and low alcohol content. The developed product has good acceptability by the consumers. Subsequently, TRIFED has executed a MOU with M/s National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), Govt of India for undertaking the assignment of technology transfer to the suitable entrepreneurs for production and marketing of the developed Mahua Nutrabeverage. TRIFED is planning to distribute this technology to party/ies selected by M/s NRDC to set up such enterprises so that they can own these enterprises and produce the Nutrabeverage developed from Mahua. Initially, M/s Adivasi Bahuuddeshiya Co-operative (ABC) Society, Raigarh, Chhattisgarh has entered into a MOU with M/s NRDC on 06.03.2020 to produce and market the developed Mahua Nutrabeverage. Mahuwa (Madhuca indica), is a prominent multipurpose forest tree among the tribal areas as it plays an important role in the rural household economy. The mahuwa flowers are a rich source of sugars (arabinose, rhamnose, glucose, fructose and sucrose) and contain appreciable amounts of vitamins, minerals and calcium. The flowers are fermented and distilled yielding spirituous liquor also known as ‘country beer’. The traditional processing practices produce distilled liquor which is frequently adulterated and thus unfit for human consumption resulting in sporadic incidents of mass poisoning resulting in death or irreversible eye damage. An estimated 90 % of annual production of Mahuwa flower is used in the process of brewing beverages. The Mahuwa flowers have hitherto remained underexploited as far as developments of other beverages are concerned. Hence TRIFED sponsored a project to IIT Delhi for development of value added product from Mahua flower and the institute has developed Mahua Niutrabeverage in blend with different conventional fruits. It has upto 5 % alcohol and is rich in Vitamin C, Phenolic content & antioxidant and considered good for healthy heart, since it can lower the risk of Cardiovascular disease.RADIANCE MEDIA NEWS & FEATURES (RMNF)
