A meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Steel, chaired by the Union Steel Minister, Ram Chandra Prasad Singh , was convened on 6th May, 2022 at Shimla to deliberate on the topic “Era of Transformation , Towards Green Steel”. Chairman Singh urged the stakeholders to come together to develop a time bound action plan and make concerted efforts to reduce emissions from the steel industry in line with the commitments made so far so that the target of green steel production is achieved. and promote "Self-reliant India".

In this meeting, fruitful discussions were held between the members of the committee , senior officials and experts of the Ministry of Steel and Steel Industry regarding the current scenario and   the era of change promoting green steel . The meeting discussed various strategies and technologies to be adopted by the steel industry to produce green steel. Its advantages and disadvantages, their Technology Readiness Level (TRL) as well as the time by which it can be made available commercially were also discussed. The discussion focused on the possibilities of using green hydrogen for use in iron production and the use of CCUS technologies to reduce emissions in line with the commitments made in COP26. Issues arising in the direction of green steel production and the need for necessary government intervention to remove the bottlenecks were also discussed in the meeting.

Members of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee, MPs Vidyut Baran Mahto , Chandra Prakash Choudhary , Janardan Singh Sigriwal , Prataprao Govindrao Patil Chikhlikar , S. Gyanathiravyam , Saptagiri Shankar Ulaka , Vijay Baghel and Akhilesh Prasad Singh participated.

The iron and steel sector is particularly challenging with respect to the reduction of carbon dioxide ( CO 2) emissions as its production process requires the use of fossil fuel-based energy and reductants. The Indian iron and steel industry has higher emissions than other industries, being coal based energy and reductant based. Therefore, it is imperative for the Indian steel industry to reduce its emissions substantially. In view of the commitments made in COP26, the pressure to reduce it is increasing day by day.
